Terrifying Geomagnetic storms on Earth today after major Solar Flare eruption

Space agencies warned that a strong solar flare is headed towards the Earth after a violent disturbance on the surface of the fiery Sun. The aftereffect of the recent explosions on the surface of the Sun may again leave the skies with dazzling auroras over the far northern US. The sun has sent clouds of charged particles through the solar system, known as Coronal Mass Ejection. Even in the past 24 hours, active sunspot AR3078 has produced four M-class solar flares and more than a dozen C-flares and most of the explosions hurled charged particles into space, SpaceWeather.com reported.

“Geomagnetic storm watches are in effect for 17-19 August, 2022 due to likely CH HSS and CME influences. Any CME influences are likely to continue on 19 Aug and a G2 (Moderate) storm watch is posted accordingly,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) informed.

The continuous terror of Solar storms on Earth

This rapid activity on the surface of the Sun has sparked a minor G1 geomagnetic storm on the Earth last night. “The past two days have had multiple geomagnetic storms--the result of a CME strike on August 17th. G1 and G2-class storms are still possible on August 19th, 20th, and 21st in response to additional CMEs on the way,” SpaceWeather predicted.

Geomagnetic storms are ranked on a scale of G1 to G5 on the basis of their intensity. Here, the G5 is denoted as the most extreme which could even bring some power grid issues, while G1 is the weakest. NOAA earlier predicted that the northern lights or auroras may be seen as far as south as Illinois and Oregon if a geomagnetic storm of the intensity G3 hits.

However, there is even a possibility of several other solar storms in the coming days. Space weather expert, Dr. Tamitha Skov says regarding sunspot AR3078, "This region just does not stop! Such a gorgeous eruption. We could very well get more #solarstorm glancing blows through August 21." More solar storms mean more geomagnetic storms possible in the coming days besides the one already predicted.
