The news was announced by WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart via a post on Twitter. “Thanks everyone who has been using this in our beta! We’re rolling this out more broadly now. We’ll be taking it slowly – we know how important backups are to people and we need to get it right – but we’re working hard to get this option out to everyone as soon as possible,” he wrote in his post.

WhatsApp also explained the development in a blog post. “While end-to-end encrypted messages you send and receive are stored on your device, many people also want a way to back up their chats in case they lose their phone. Starting today, we are making available an extra, optional layer of security to protect backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud with end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp explained in a blog post.

WhatsApp said that now all WhatsApp for Android users and WhatsApp for iOS users will be able to secure their conversations with the newly introduced end-to-end encrypted backup option with either a password of their choice or a 64-digit encryption key that is known only to the WhatsApp user. “Neither WhatsApp nor your backup service provider will be able to read your backups or access the key required to unlock it,” the company added. This means that if users lose this password or their 64-digit encryption key, they will lose their chat backups as well.
