The last date to link your PAN to your Aadhaar card has once again been extended by the Central Government. Before the extension, the last date to link the PAN and Aadhaar card was September 30, 2021. It has now been extended by six more months to March 31, 2022. The process to link your PAN and Aadhaar is very simple and we have outlined it at the end of this article, and while you do have six more months to do it, we suggest you do not procrastinate.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement that in an effort to address the hardships faced by various stakeholders due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the timeline to link PAN to Aadhaar has been extended to ease compliance. "Time limit for intimation of Aadhaar number to the Income tax Department for linking of PAN with Aadhaar has been extended from 30th September, 2021 to 31st March, 2022," the CBDT said in a statement.

And that's not all, the Central Government has also issued a few other extensions. The due date for completion of penalty proceedings indeed the I-T Act has been extended to March 31, 2022 from September 30, 2021. Also, the time limit for issuance of notice and passing of order by the Adjudicating Authority under the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988 has been extended to March 2022 as well.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar?

You can link PAN and Aadhaar in two very easy ways - through SMS or by going online to the Income Tax site and doing it from there. Not linking your PAN to your Aadhaar card will render your PAN useless once the deadline is over. Since currently your PAN is linked to your bank accounts, Provident Fund (PF) accounts, I-T returns, etc, failure to link PAN and Aadhaar will make accessing all these very troublesome once the deadline passes.

How to link Aadhaar and PAN via SMS

This one of the simplest ways to link PAN and Aadhaar, in fact, the Income Tax Department has urged taxpayers to link the two via the SMS-based facility that is available since it is rather hassle-free. To do this, follow the step as listed below:

1. Send an SMS to 567678 or to 56161 from your registered mobile number in the following format:

UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>

So for example UIDPAN 123456789123 AKPLM2124M where the first 12 digits are your Aadhaar number and the next 10 alpha-numeric one is your PAN.

And that's it, once you have sent the SMS, your Aadhaar and PAN will be linked.

The other way to do this is through the e-filing website online. For this, follow the steps as listed below:

How to link Aadhaar and PAN online

1. Go online and head to the Income Tax site by clicking here.

2. Type on your PAN, Aadhaar number as listed on the respective cards.

3. If only your birth year is mentioned in the Aadhaar, select the right square.

4. Enter the Captcha code. For the visually impaired, there is an option to request an OTP instead of the Captcha code and the OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

5. Next, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar' button.
