WhatsApp transfer from iPhone to Android free: The moment iPhone users have been waiting for has finally arrived - WhatsApp is now allowing users on iOS to transfer their chats to an Android device. The WhatsApp chat transfer is possible between an iPhone and select Samsung devices, and we tested out the feature on a Samsung smartphone and were able to transfer our chats, groups, and settings without any issues.

Despite being around since 2009, WhatsApp app has not provided users with a reliable method to transfer their chats from an iPhone to an Android device and vice versa. The Whatsapp app also backs up to different cloud providers on each platform – iCloud on iOS and Google Drive on Android. This meant that if you used an iPhone for years, and wanted to switch to an Android phone, you would have to either give up all your older chats and start afresh – or rely on “unofficial” third-party apps that were unsupported by WhatsApp.

That changed at Samsung's recent Galaxy Unpacked event, where it was revealed that WhatsApp chat transfer from iPhone to Android has been made possible. While we reported a short while ago that the feature appeared on WhatsApp for iOS, it was not functioning properly. Noted feature leaker WABetaInfo now says that the WhatsApp transfer feature is now working, so we decided to give it a spin and found that it works reliably.

WhatsApp transfer from iPhone to Android free: Steps to take

Before starting the WhatsApp chat transfer from iOS to Android, users must remember that the app only allows transfers in one direction – and it only works on Samsung devices, although support for more devices should arrive at a later date. Chat transfers from Android to iOS are currently unsupported and users might not be able to move back unless they have an iCloud backup handy. In order to complete the transfer, you will need to update WhatsApp for iOS to the latest version, a Lightning to USB-C cable, and a Samsung smartphone running Android 10 and above with the Samsung SmartSwitch app installed – to facilitate the transfer.

Step 1) Open the Samsung SmartSwitch app and tap Receive, then select the iPhone option.

Step 2) Now connect the USB-C to Lightning cable into both devices, then authorise on the iPhone. You may also have to enter your encrypted iTunes backup password to continue.

Step 3) You will need to select the components you want to transfer. Make sure you select apps and app data.

Step 4) Samsung SmartSwitch will now show you a QR code, which you must scan with your iPhone. It will take you to the WhatsApp chat settings where you can start the transfer on that end.

Step 5) You will have to wait a long while until the transfer completes. This can take anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes, depending on the number of messages you have saved and how many attachments you have sent and received.

Step 6) After SmartSwitch informs you that the WhatsApp transfer has been completed successfully, you should open the app and confirm your number and let it import all the messages. You can unplug the cable at this point.

Step 7) You can now set your username and profile photo and use WhatsApp with all your chats and groups on your Android smartphone.
