Your WhatsApp account holds a lot of chats and other data; something you obviously don't want to land in wrong hands. The obvious choice is to keep it all protected but sometimes, putting a fingerprint or facial verification to the app is not enough. There is a possibility of hackers gaining access to your phone number and using it to register your WhatsApp account on their device.

If this makes concerned about privacy, here's what you need to. WhatsApp offers a built-in two-step verification system that adds an extra layer of security to your account. Unlike other 2FA systems, WhatsApp does not rely on phone numbers to send the code. Instead, it makes you create a custom code that you need to provide in order to login.

Here, you will get to know how to set up a two step verification system on your WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp two-step verification process

Note that this two-step verification system works on both Android and iPhone devices.

  • Open WhatsApp and tap on Settings under the three-dot menu on Android. On iPhone, you need to tap on the Settings tab.
  • Tap on Account.
  • Under this section, you will find two step verification as one of the options listed. Tap on it.
  • WhatsApp will inform you about how the system works and will eventually give an option to “Enable” it. Tap on Enable.
  • You will be asked to provide a six-digit code. Note that you need to remember your six-digit code.
  • Next, you will be provided with an option to enter your email ID. This is just for account recovery is case you forget the six-digit code.
  • Once you enter that, you are now done.
  • If you are logging your WhatsApp account on a new Android phone or an iPhone, you will need to enter this six-digit code in order to continue settings up your account. 
  • WhatsApp warns of not sharing this six-digit code with anyone over a call, message or WhatsApp text.
