Know all about this major Face ID upgrade in iPhone 15. (Apple Insider)

It was recently reported that the iPhone 15 just went for its first trial run of production in China, which is about two months earlier than usual. Apple did this to ensure that enough units were available ahead of the launch and the company did not suffer with lack of stock like it did during the Christmas and new year. But this has also accelerated the rumors and leaked information around the smartphone. And if reports are to be believed, the iPhone 15 might change its design in a big way. According to reports, the Face ID can get a big upgrade. The Face ID biometric sensor in iPhone 15 could go under-display. The latest iPhone 14 Pro-models have ditched the notch in favor of the dynamic island, but with this move, iPhone 15 models will enjoy a larger display real-estate. Read on.

The report comes from South Korean electronics industry outlet The Elec, which reveals, “Apple is planning to use hole-display for all four models of its iPhone 15 series…Hole-display has a hole in the display panel where the front camera is located, allowing there to be more screens compared to notches”.

This is an interesting development. It could be reminiscent of Samsung's biometric sensors which are done under-display as well. So, all that would remain is one single hole through the display to house the front camera.

iPhone 15 to get a major Face ID upgrade

This would be the first major physical upgrade to the Face ID ever since it was introduced in 2017 with the iPhone X. Ever since it replaced the Touch ID, it has remained on top of the display in the shape of a rectangular notch. The notch itself has gotten so popular that rival brands also adopted it to their smartphones. But users have always complained about the display real-estate it takes up.

Throughout the years, Apple has tried to reduce the size of the notch to give a higher percentage of the display for the user to access, but with Samsung introducing the Infinity-O display, where there is only one hole for the front camera, Apple was struggling to compete. The idea was ingenious since Samsung was able to increase screen-to-display ratio without changing the dimensions of its smartphones. And now, Apple might be taking the same route.

It is not clear at the moment whether this upgrade will come to some or all the iPhone 15 models, but on the basis of past trends, it is likely that only the Pro-models could get this upgrade.

Do note, this information has not been confirmed by Apple or any other official sources and a lot can change between now and the release of the device. So, do take this information with a healthy amount of skepticism till the smartphones are officially launched.
