Motorola has just unveiled the Moto G31 in India and once again, it has delivered on expectations. If you are one of those who comments on social media, “put AMOLED screens on budget phones brooo”, Motorola has heard you. For a starting price of 12,999, the Moto G31 is stupendously loaded.

India gets two variants of the Moto G31 this time; a base version with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, and another variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage at 14,999. Whichever version you pickup, the Moto G31 is easily one of the best phones in its class. The reason I say that is because I have been using it for the past week and while a review is still some days away, I have my first impressions to share.

Moto G31 Design

Compared to the Moto G30 from last year, the Moto G31 feels like a massive improvement. It is still a plastic unibody construction but the material feels robust, which adds greatly to the overall fit and finish. The attention to detail is good; look at the elegant rear cameras and the nicely stacked buttons along with the cleverly hidden fingerprint scanner.

Top that with the pretty dark colour gradient that changes colours from maroon to blue hues depending on the light; the Moto G31 is an attractive phone with a universal appeal. And, despite packing a 5000mAh battery, the phone is surprisingly lightweight and slim.

And thanks to that AMOLED display, the bezels are largely slim in comparison to its predecessor. The chin is still substantial and I wish Motorola figured a way out to squash it. There’s always the next time though.

Moto G31 features and specs

Motorola has been proudly promoting the AMOLED display on the Moto G31, just like that famous scene from The Lion King. Not many phones under 15,000 offer an AMOLED display, which automatically brings attention to the Moto G31 from display nerds. Being an AMOLED display, this 6.4-inch FHD+ canvas looks lively with its high contrast colours. The lack of a high refresh rate feature is noticeable but the screen itself looks great.

Moreover, the colourful iteration of Motorola’s “near-stock” Android 11 utilizes the AMOLED panel to its advantage, elevating the user experience. The UI is free of unwanted apps and advertisements, which is always a welcome change from the likes of MIUI and Realme UI. And, you still have tasteful customization options to play with.

Motorola is using a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset here. It is not as eager as MediaTek’s Dimensity chips but so far, it has managed to put up a good show. More on this later in our full review. Initial battery life figures are promising, as expected from a Motorola phone in 2021; I am going two full days on a single charge.

Another good news for Indian consumers: the Moto G31 supports 20W fast charging unlike the 10W solution for the global variant.

The Moto G31 has just two cameras on the rear: a 50MP main and an 8MP ultra-wide. I am yet to test out these cameras properly, hence I reserve my comments for the full review.

The Moto G31 is a truly tempting smartphone for the price it sells. Based on our initial impressions, this could be an easy one to recommend for multimedia geeks. Those willing to buy the Redmi Note 10 could have a more affordable, and maybe a better alternative in the Moto G31. That said, you should wait for our full review of the Moto G31 over the next few days for our overall verdict.
