Redmi chief teases new ‘super performance’ smartphone

Redmi's upcoming smartphone is expected to feature MediaTek's upcoming chipset.

Xiaomi Vice President and Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing has teased a new Redmi smartphone that could make a debut soon.

The Xiaomi executive took to Weibo to share a post wherein in Chinese which translates to “super performance, unexpected…” in English. Shortly after, he shared a MediaTek post on Weibo that talks about another 5G-related development that the company will share at its upcoming event on May 18. This suggests that the company is planning to launch a smartphone presumably with MediaTek upcoming 5G chipset.

Talking about MediaTek, the company which launched Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 1000 chipsets back in January and Dimensity 1000+ with the launch of iQOOZ1 earlier this month, is planning to launch a mid-budget processor, Dimensity 800+ at its May 18 event. The chipset is expected to come with a stronger GPU for a better gaming performance.

Coming back to the Redmi smartphone, there is no word on what the company's plans are at the moment. That said, a mysterious Redmi smartphone was spotted on TENAA earlier this week. The Redmi smartphone with model number M2004J7AC comes with a 6.57-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. It sports a waterdrop notch that houses the selfie camera. Additionally, the 5G phone is expected to come with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage space. As per a report by Gizmo China, it runs on Android 10 and is backed by a 4,420mAh battery. The primage image hints that the phone will have a 48-megapixel primary camera at the back and a 16-megapixel camera in the front.

At this point it remains uncertain whether the Redmi executive is indeed talking about the mysterious Redmi smartphone that was spotted on the Chinese listing site. We will update you as soon as we have more details on the matter.
