Apple just killed off this iPhone feature in iPhone 15

1/6 In spite of the upcoming iPhone 14 launch in around September or October, the most awaited feature will actually debut with its successor, the iPhone 15. Apparently, Apple has stopped working on its under-display fingerprint sensor technology for iPhone 14, according to LeaksApplePro. (REUTERS)

2/6 According to a report by GizChina, Apple will be diverting its resources towards researching and enhancing its Face ID and under-display camera technology, which will enable the company to remove the notch altogether. (ConceptiPhone)

6/6 With the release of iOS 15.4 beta version, Apple brought a new feature that enables Face ID unlocking even with a mask on. However all this information should be taken with a pinch of salt as it is based on speculation , and until we hear something from Apple officially, all of these features remain unconfirmed. No iPhone user had much of an issue with the infamous display notch, other than bickering writers and Android fanboys on Twitter. However, in an era when Samsung and other Android phone makers are edging close to hiding the front camera, having a big blacked out notch on the latest exorbitantly priced iPhone was an eyesore. Apple resorted to a pill-shaped cutout solution with this year's iPhone 14 Pro models, calling it the Dynamic Island. It is not better than the notch in practicality but it looks fun and is nicer to see. This will now be a part of the standard iPhone 15 models next year.

Based on the latest statements from Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants, it seems that Apple will ditch the notch entirely on the iPhone 15 generation and stay put on the Dynamic Island entirely. Hence, the pill shaped cutout for the cameras and Face ID sensors will be standard on the iPhone 15 models, and the Dynamic Island could get more functionality going forward.

Dynamic Island is the way forward

The Dynamic Island is essentially a clever way to mask the cutouts and induce more practicality for enhancing practicality. On the iPhone 14 Pro Max, we have seen this allowing quicker access to Apple's first party apps such as Apple Music, Recorder, Times and the likes. In the future, it is expected that more third-party apps will be able to take advantage of the Dynamic Island bar.

Sadly, Ross also says that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus won't see the faster 120Hz refresh rate displays, which Apple calls ProMotion. He says that BOE, which is one of many Apple's display suppliers, will be able to sustain the supply of LTPO panels for the masses by 2024, if things go well. Hence, it could be one more year of 60Hz displays on the vanilla iPhone models before we can expect faster refresh rates on the standard models.

The Dynamic Island seems to be the next big thing for Android smartphones and there are already rumours of some brands working on a replica of the same. It will be interesting to see how Android brands do a Dynamic Island replica on the smaller camera hold cutouts.
