MediaTek MT9602 chip for smart TVs launched, Motorola first brand to embrace the SoC

Motorola will launch MediaTek MT9602-based smart TVs in India on October 9. The smart TVs will be available on Flipkart.

MediaTek on Thursday announced the launch of MT9602, a new processor exclusively aimed at the smart TVs. Compatible with modern 4K HDR smart TVs, the new processor focuses on delivering better video and audio quality. 

Motorola will be the first brand to launch MediaTek MT9602-based smart TVs (Ultra HD, HD and Full HD). The smart TVs will launch on October 9 and will be exclusive to Flipkart.

“The MediaTek MT9602 is a high-performance smart TV SoC with comprehensive features targeting modern 4K HDR displays. Designed for TV manufacturers create highly competitive products with global application, the MT9602 integrates high performance, multi-core CPU and modern GPU,” says MediaTek on its website.

MediaTek's new chip comes with AI-PQ (picture quality) & AI-AQ (audio quality) technologies to deliver better picture and audio-video quality through a real-time video optimisation, the company said in a release. The built-in AI voice technologies also make it better compatible with voice assistants.

The MT9602 comes with support for up to three HDMI 2.1a. It also has Dolby Atmos surround support. For better visuals, it has support for all basic HDR standards includes the likes of HDR 10+. Furthermore, it has support for codec standards such as AV1 and AVS2 for video streaming. MediaTek points out that the AV1 codec can deliver 30% more compression efficiency over VP9.

The processor also comes with a Response Time Compensation Engine which is aimed at reducing blurs. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi for better connectivity.

In terms of specifications, MediaTek MT9602 features 64bit, Arm Cortex A53, quad cores, Arm Mali-G52 MC1, 48b DDR3 memory, 2GB maximum memory. The chipset supports up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) resolution. HDR standards supported are BBC HLG, HDR10 (SMPTE2084), Dolby Vision HDR, Technicolor/Philips JHDR (ESTI TS 103 433), HDR10+, and China HDR (Preliminary Support). For interfaces, it supports HDMI 2.0/1.4 with HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.1a, and USB 2.0.
