Whoa! Fortnite free on iPhone and iPad now

Microsoft and Epic Games bring Fornite to Xbox Cloud Gaming allowing iPhone users to play the game for free.

After an extended absence, Fortnite is back on Apple devices, and Epic Games is back on Microsoft. The iOS and iPadOS gamers can finally play Fortnite once again after Microsoft and Epic Games brought Fornite to Xbox Cloud Gaming allowing users to play the game without an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. You can now play Fortnite on an Android phone or tablet, or Windows PC with internet access through a web browser by simply using your Microsoft Account. There is no need to download or install anything.

But before you jump in excitement, do note that the Xbox Cloud Gaming service is still technically in beta, so it's currently available in only 26 countries. Microsoft has also announced that they are planning to bring more free-to-play games to the Xbox Cloud Gaming service for the mobile gaming fans who aren't too keen on Fortnite. They said, “At Xbox we want to make gaming accessible to the 3 billion players around the world, and cloud has an important role in that mission." However, there's currently no confirmation on what other free-to-play games will be made available.

It would be pretty interesting to see if Microsoft is truly committed to its mission of making gaming more accessible and how long free-to-play games actually stay free on the cloud.

Until now, Xbox Cloud Gaming was available to only paid Game Pass subscribers, but now Fortnite will be free, with Microsoft removing the subscription requirement for free-to-play games.

How to play Fortnite for free on your iPhone and iPad

Step 1:

To play Fortnite on your iPhone and iPad, head over to xbox.com/play in the Chrome app on your iOS, iPadOS, or Android device. 

Step 2:

Sign into your Microsoft account or create one, if you don’t have one and choose Fortnite. You'll see other games listed as well, but for now Fortnite is the only free game.

Step 3:

Tap on the Fortnite and you’re all set to begin.
