Amazon has brought in a new feature on its Alexa-powered smartspeakers that lets you ‘drop in' on a connected Echo device. So now you can call another Echo device from one near you and speak to someone without that person essentially having to ‘accept' the call.

The latest May updates for Alexa brings in this ‘drop in' feature will let users drop in on any device as long as they are all connected to the same account. So that means you can just drop in on devices around you, you cannot use it to make a call to another device that's not connected to your account. For that, you will have to ask Alexa to place a call and wait for the person to accept it.

Why how would a feature like this help?

This drop in feature lets you turn all your Alexa-powered speakers into intercom systems. Assuming you have multiple Amazon Echo speakers around your house, you can easily call someone in another room without having to move. It's also a convenient way to make announcements for everyone at home - like dinner's ready.

Another feature that has been added lets you set reminders on all speakers so as you get to hear them no matter where you are in the house. This too, obviously, is applicable to speakers tied to a particular account.
