The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are now official. Both phones are using Google's Tensor chip and bring advanced new camera systems.

After months of teasing and even rolling out an entire website, Google has finally unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro officially. With the new tensor chip and upgraded camera systems, the new phones bring a massive leap over last year's Pixel 5.

Before we head into the features, here are the prices. The Pixel 6 starts at $599 whereas the Pixel 6 Pro, which is the true flagship model, starts at $899. The phones will be available in select markets for pre-orders and will be in stores from October 28.

Pixel 6 series features

The Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a refresh rate of 90Hz whereas the Pixel 6 Pro gets a 6.7-inch QHD+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz that also curves on the edges.. The display on both the models is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The display houses in in-screen fingerprint scanner. The phones are water and dust resistant.

The Pixel 6 series relies on the Tensor chipset, which has been developed in-house by Google.  The Tensor chip houses the Titan M2  security chip that Google says has the most layers of security. The chip has a processor with two dedicated high performance Cortex-X1 cores, two mid-cores, and four power efficient cores. The GPU has 20 cores, which Google says is 370 percent faster than the Pixel 5's chip. The Pro model also has up to 12GB RAM.

The phone ships with Android 12 out of the box with the Material You interface, and Google is promising up to five years of security updates. Android 12 is also coming out on Pixel 3 and newer phones with the same interface.

The main camera on both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro has a 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor with f/1.85-inch aperture and 1/1.3-inch sensor size. Both phones also have a 12MP ultra-wide camera with 114-degres FOV. The Pixel 6 Pro gets a third 48MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom and 20X digital zoom. Google says that the new sensor captures 150 percent more light than the Pixel 5's camera.

Using the Tensor chip's advanced ML and AI capabilities, the Pixel 6 series phones have a Magic Eraser feature that can remove unwanted subjects altogether from the picture. Face Unblur will sharpen blurry faces in low light situation while Motion Mode can artificially blur the background to add some action to images. Quick Tap to Snap allows Snapchat users to tap the back and record a snap quickly. Real Tone will use AI to retain the original colour tones of people from various races.

The front camera on the Pixel 6 is an 8MP sensor sitting inside a punch-hole cutout. The Pixel 6 Pro gets a better 11.1MP selfie camera.

The Pixel 6 also has an on-device speech recognition model that can transcribe speech. The Tensor chip claims to do it using half as much power as previously possible. This enables features like Live Transcribe, Voice Typing, helpful call features and Emoji Transcription.

Lastly, the Pixel 6 relies on a 4600mAh battery while the Pixel 6 Pro gets a bigger 5000mAh battery. Both support 30W wired charging and up to 23W wireless charging via the Pixel Stand charger.
