iPhone SE+ 5G: Do iPhone SE 3 leaks point at a useless Apple upgrade?

The iPhone SE+ 5G, or iPhone SE 3 is expected to launch later this year and Apple could bring minimum upgrades. Is it useless?

2022's most anticipated iPhone is right now the next generation iPhone SE, not the iPhone 14. Apple is expected to update the 2020 model with a few upgrades that it thinks should keep it relevant in 2022. Leaks suggest Apple could call it the iPhone SE+ 5G, or iPhone SE 2022, simply the new iPhone SE. Apple, however, is yet to comment anything officially on the new iPhone SE.

Based on the leaked information so far, it seems that Apple is coming up with relatively minimal update rather than all-round upgrade. For old-time iPhone fans, this could be a good deal given that many are still used to the compact dimensions of the 4.7-inch iPhone models from the past, such as iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone 6, etc.

How does all of it shape up in the grand scheme of things?

iPhone SE+ 5G leaks at a glance

Based on all the leaks we have seen so far, here's how the iPhone SE 3 shaped up.

- A display of 4.7-inches with an LCD panel, similar to the current iPhone SE.

- The Home Button based Touch ID fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication.

- A new Apple A series chipset inside, possibly the Apple A15 from the iPhone 13.

- A 12MP single rear camera and a 7MP front camera.

- Similar 1821mAh capacity battery expected inside.

- Glass-metal construction with IP rating for water and dust resistance.

- Could likely launch with iOS 15 in the newest avatar.

Quite a useless upgrade

If Apple eventually ends up bringing this version of the iPhone SE to the world, we think it could suffer the same fate as the iPhone 13 Mini/iPhone 12 Mini.

- It seems the 5G upgrade is crucial for Apple on the updated iPhone SE. 5G is yet to reach many parts of the world and in countries where the existing versions of the iPhone SE was popular, there's no 5G connectivity yet. And even if 5G arrives in a year, its availability will be limited.

- 5G phones require more power for those faster 5G speeds and on a phone with a smaller 1821mAh battery, battery life could be dismal. The current iPhone SE with 4G connectivity can barely make it to the end of the day under regular use cases. Unless Apple upgrades the battery, this iPhone could barely survive half a day.

- A 4.7-inch display in 2022 is small by all means. In a world where apps are optimised to work better on 6-inch and larger displays, doing anything on the iPhone SE's small 4.7-inch screen will be a toughie. Imagine using Instagram on a small 4.7-inch display! You can barely see anything.

- The iPhone SE's design is based on the iPhone 8, which itself didn't change much since 2014. Those fat display bezels and the overall dated design are barely acceptable in an age where phone screen are folding!

- Lastly, it is the cameras. The current iPhone SE has a capable single rear camera but compared to every other at its price, it falls behind. If Apple continues using the same old iPhone 8 image sensor, the iPhone SE 3 could be a tough sell for photographers. Only if Apple gives it the same sensor-shift image sensor as the iPhone 13, it could end up to be a pleasing deal for camera lovers. The same stands for its barbaric 7MP front camera.
