JioPhone Next: How India reacted to first Reliance smartphone
After missing its first launch date on Ganesh Chaturthi, Reliance Jio finally managed to launch the JioPhone Next on Diwali in India. JioPhone Next is the first Reliance smartphone. JioPhone Next price was fixed at ₹6499 and this did disappoint potential buyers who expected a spectacular kind of deal that Reliance is generally known for. JioPhone Next is primarily targetted at rural customers. However, it seems that the smartphone is luring customers from other segments too. JioPhone Next received an extremely positive response from retailers and customers not only from rural areas, but from urban areas as well. This has been revealed by Reliance Retail, which is handling overall sales of the device.
"The market response for the Pragati OS, especially its voice, camera and language features, has been very positive," Reliance Retail told the Economic Times. Though the smartphone can be purchased only through Jio Mart Digital Partner retailers and outlets, still it has been rolled out at an accelerated pace across the country, the company claimed.
The success of the JioPhone Next smartphone, depends a lot on how Jio actually manages to target its own 500 million user base, which consists of feature phone users. The problem is that Jio has lost about 11 million users in the July-September quarter to end the period with 429.5 million subscribers.
Jio credits the current success of JioPhone Next on its payment options. While JioPhone Next price is ₹6,499, buyers can opt for a downpayment option of ₹1999 with ₹500 processing cost, and the rest paid out over 18 or 24 months in monthly instalments. This is said to have attracted customers in droves. The smartphone is currently available for order by retailers, while the deliveries are set to begin in the upcoming weeks.
JioPhone Next specs and features
The Jio Phone Next is equipped with a Qualcomm quad-core Chipset and a 3500 mAh battery. The 5.45-inch HD+ display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and features a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP lens at front. The JioPhone Next includes 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Jio and Google collaborated on Pragati OS, which is the first to appear on the JioPhone Next. The smartphone has a Read Aloud and Translate option to assist the marginalised rural customers. The smartphone comes with a dual SIM slot setup, but the primary SIM will be locked to the Jio SIM card only.
