Nubia seems to be working on making phones look beautiful if a little teaser posted on Weibo is anything to go by. There is a new video posted on the Chinese site which has the caption - “The new technology of the Red Devils [Red Magic] gaming phone has been exposed, and the back shell seems to be able to switch back and forth between transparent and colored. Are you looking forward to mass production?”, according to a report in XDA Developers.

This video and caption seem to be pointing towards the fact that Nubia is experimenting with electrochromic properties on the back of their smartphones. Which means, if they do come out with a handset that has electrochromic properties, it will be able to change colours.

This teaser video was posted on AnTuTu's official Weibo account and this could be an indicator of the fact that AnTuTu might have access to one of those electrochromic smartphone units for benchmarking purposes or for marketing purposes.

However, the Weibo account is trustworthy enough so you can believe the video to be true.

Also, this is not the first time smartphone manufacturers have experimented with electrochromic casing. Earlier this year Vivo showed off a device that could change colours from blue to silver. OnePlus used the same tech to hide the rear view cameras on its concept phone.

One of the main challenges for smartphone designers working with electrochromic smartphones has been to find a way to keep the power consumption low so as not to deprive other components. If they manage to keep the battery cool the less chances are there for the device to get overworked and overheated.

The handset teased in the video is possibly the successor to the Nubia Red Magic 5G that was released in 2020, but this cannot be confirmed yet.
