Samsung could release three new smartphone chipsets this year

Samsung could launch a new mid-range processor, alongside two high-performance processors later this year, according to a noted leaker.

It has only been a little over a month since Samsung launched their new flagship Exynos 2100 chipset, an impressive offering from the South Korean giant and the first in recent times to drop the company's custom Mongoose cores for standard ARM cores. After the company's gambit paid off and the chipset received positive reviews in the latest Galaxy S21 series, it appears the company is looking to replicate the same success in not one, but three new Exynos sensors.

According to a tweet posted by noted leaker Ice Universe, the South Korean company will reportedly launch one Exynos 8xx processor, which could be a modest new chipset from the company for an affordable smartphone line and would make for a good replacement for the company's widely used Exynos 9611 chipset. The leaker also revealed that the first chipset would be followed by an Exynos 12xx processor and then by an Exynos 22xx processor, which seem to be successors to the Exynos 1080 and the Exynos 2100.

Samsung is likely looking to replicate the success of its very high-performance Exynos 2100 processor that managed to keep pace with the Snapdragon 888 this year, save for some heating issues that caused a bit of thermal throttling after the sustained performance. Another area that Samsung's processors slightly lag behind their Qualcomm counterparts is in the graphics department but that could change with the rumoured AMD chipset partnership.

However, readers might recall that while Samsung was rumoured to be working with AMD on a new chipset for an upcoming flagship mobile, recent reports have suggested that it might be for an ARM-based laptop instead. It is too early to tell, but we will know more once Samsung confirms or denies the reports.
