Spotify integrates with Facebook iOS and Android apps, brings in-app music and podcast support

Music streaming service Spotify has added several features over the years, while also gaining support for new integrations with popular apps including Tinder, Nike+, and Shazam. On Monday, Spotify announced that it was adding a new integration – that would allow Facebook users to listen to tracks and podcasts from within the Facebook app, instead opening the Spotify app on their phone.

In an announcement posted earlier today, the company said that the Spotify media player will allow users on the company's paid tier to listen to songs and podcast episodes without being interrupted in the Facebook app, while free users would be able to use the same Shuffle Mode and ad-supported experience they were used to in the app.

This means that music and episodes shared on Facebook will now play inside the app in a ‘miniplayer' section at the bottom of the Facebook app. Spotify says that verified artists' posts and user-uploaded videos containing licensed music can be played from the new miniplayer. However, you will need to have the Spotify app installed as well as a registered account with the sreaming service.

Users who want to launch the miniplayer can tap the play button on any song (or media containing licensed music) while on Facebook, which will show a new dialog box asking user for their consent to connect the two services. Users will need to make sure they are logged into the Spotify app, so that your accounts on the two services are properly linked together. After that they can continue to browse Facebook and the Spotify app will keep playing their media in the background.

While support for other markets is likely to arrive in the coming months, Spotify is currently rolling out the miniplayer feature integration with the Facebook app in Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa, Thailand, Uruguay, and the United States.
