Apple launched the iPhone 13 series last month, bringing four new smartphones to the company's product portfolio. With the arrival of the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple brought a photography feature that has been on rival Android phones for years now – macro photography. Apple's high-end models are popular for great camera performance, but now an ophthalmologist is using an iPhone 13 Pro Max for something amazing - to diagnose patients with eye-related ailments.

The novel use of Apple's recently released iPhone 13 Pro Max to treat patients was shared on LinkedIn by opthalmologist Dr Tommy Korn. By using the macro mode on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the doctor has been capturing images of his patients' eyes that can help to better understand medical conditions and ailments. The doctor explained how he was using the smartphone's macro mode to diagnose patients.

Unlike many Android manufacturers, Apple has not used a new lens for macro photography on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Instead, the company has used the ultra-wide camera which has been equipped with the ability to click images of subjects as close as two centimetres to the camera. Dr Korn, who works at the Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, gave the example of a patient who had undergone a cornea transplant. Doctors check these patients eyes to monitor if the ‘abrasion' has been healed.

“Been using the iPhone 13 Pro Max for MACRO eye photos this week. Impressed. Will innovate patient eye care & telemedicine. forward to seeing where it goes… Photos are from healing a resolving abrasion in a cornea transplant. Permission was obtained to use photos,” the doctor explained in the post. “PS: this “Pro camera” includes a telephone app too!” he added jokingly.
