From new MacBook Pro models to Mac Mini and AirPods 3, there’s a lot to look forward to at today’s Apple Unleashed launch event. Here’s what you need to know and how to tune in.

Just over a month after it launched the iPhone 13 series and a new smartwatch, Apple is all set to host another launch event today. At the Apple ‘Unleashed’ event, users can expect to see the launch of new Macs running on Apple’s in-house chipsets. Apple enthusiasts and analysts are both expecting to see two MacBook Pro models launched today, alongside a new Mac mini and even a new set of AirPods, according to reports. The event will begin at 10:30 PM IST and users can tune into the event on the company’s website and on YouTube.

One of the most important announcements that Apple made last year was the arrival of the MacBooks powered by its in-house ARM-based Apple Silicon chips. Apple’s M1 chipset bears a striking similarity to the A14 Bionic chipset with a few improvements, but it revolutionised the laptop sector offering radically improved performance, fantastic battery life and more. Today, Apple is expected to launch a new M1X chipset, the successor to the M1 that is likely to completely replace Intel chips from the company’s lineup. Here’s what readers can look forward to seeing at today’s Apple Unleashed event.

New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models

This year, users can expect to see redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that could come with a flat design, slimmer bezels and the return of the MagSafe charger. The device is also expected to feature an HDMI port and an SD Card slot, according to reports. Whether we will see a notched display as suggested by a leak on Weibo remains to be seen, and the display is likely to feature smaller bezels with Mini-LED technology for better quality displays. Rumours of a 120Hz display have appeared numerous times, but it remains to be seen whether the “ProMotion” displays make their way to the MacBook Pro models.

New Mac mini

The Mac mini is Apple’s popular M1-enabled computer that offers a lot of power in a very small footprint. Apple could be looking to launch a new Mac mini during the Unleashed event. This new Mac mini might feature a ‘plexiglass’ top over the aluminium chassis and come with a new magnetic power port. The device is expected to be powered by an updated chipset, hopefully, the M1X chipset that Apple is expected to bring with the MacBook Pro models. The new Mac mini may also replace the Intel Mac mini which means users may only have two ARM-based Mac mini options going forward.

New AirPods 3

Apple is developing the AirPods 3 as a successor to the company’s AirPods 2 true wireless earbuds that could feature shorter stems and a new charging case, but it is unclear whether the earbuds will feature silicon ear tips like the AirPods Pro. Competitors are now offering features like Active Noise Cancellation at much cheaper prices, so it remains to be seen whether Apple includes this feature on the AirPods 3.

macOS Monterey

The big software announcement expected today is macOS Monterey, the next version of Apple’s desktop operating system. While macOS Big Sur was designed with M1 chipsets in mind brought notable changes to the OS in terms of design and features, it will be interesting to see what Apple has brought with macOS Monterey. We do not know when the software will launch, but assuming the new MacBook Pro models are expected to ship with the operating system, one can safely assume it will arrive over the coming weeks.
