Apple has long said to be working on an augmented reality (AR)-based eye gear called Apple Glass. Some reports in the past hinted towards the device launching alongside the iPhone 12 series. But that didn't happen. Now, a new report sheds light on how the company's purported new device would work.

The company, as per a report by PhoneArena, has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) titled ‘Display System with Localised Optical Adjustments'. The report says that the Apple Glass will come with lenses that will adjust themselves as per the ambient lighting conditions making the real world image lighter or darker.

For instance, if the Apple Glass is being used to look at the computer-generated images while objects in the real world are in the background, the brightness of the real-world objects can be selectively decreased so that users can focus on the computer-generated objects if they choose to do so. “In particular, a spatially addressable adjustable light modulator may be used to generate a dark region that overlaps a bright real-world object that is overlapped by computer-generated content in the upper right corner of a user's field of view,” the patent says.

As mentioned earlier, this is not the first time that we are hearing about Apple Glass. Back in 2018, industry insiders suggested that the Apple Glass would be powered by a 5nm chip. At the time, iPhone X was running on the 7nm technology-based A11 Bionic chipset. Now, the company's iPhone 12 series is powered by A14 Bionic chipset that uses the 5nm process, which indicates that the Apple Glass is closer to a launch than ever before.

That said, Apple hasn't said a word about the device yet and so we will keep our fingers crossed for now.
