At the Google I/O 2022, Google unveiled a couple of new hardware products to be announced over the next few months. Among the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel tablet, Google also announced a Pixel Watch. This will officially be the first smartwatch from Google in years and the quick sneak peek at the event left many drooling over its design on social media. Hence, it would only make sense to expect the latest chipset to feature inside this Pixel Watch, right? That may sadly not be the case. In fact, the Pixel Watch is now said to be getting a chipset back from 2018!

Based on a new report from 9To5Google, it is said that the Pixel Watch will help itself with the Samsung Exynos 9110 chipset, which is a 10nm chip. If you can't remember what other device used this chip, take a quick look at the specifications sheet of the Samsung Galaxy Watch from 2018. Yes, Google is apparently using the years old chipset in its first smartwatch!

Now Google hasn't revealed any details regarding its choice of chipset, which is why we suggest you hold on until we have confirmed information on the same. Until then, we have to be content with this surprising fact!

Note that the Exynos 9110 isn't as bad as it sounds, especially when yo compare it with the popular Snapdragon equivalent chip. The Snapdragon Wear 4100+ has been the popular choice for Fossil and other Wear OS watch makers over the last year. This is a 12nm chip while the Exynos 9110 is a 10nm chip. Hence, the Pixel Watch should be able to return better battery life.

The report says that Google has been developing the Pixel Watch for years and the Exynos 9110 was the latest chip back then. Hence, Google continued using the same for its first watch.

As for performance credentials, we don't know how capable this chip is on Wear OS. In 2018, the Samsung Galaxy Watch was using Tizen OS as its preferred platform and Tizen works differently to Wear OS.

Currently, the Exynos W920 is the latest and most powerful chip for Wear OS devices to make use of. However, the chip is only used by Samsung for its Galaxy Watch 4 series devices. We don't know whether Samsung is yet to open up this chip for other brands to use.
