Motorola launches ‘Ready For’, a DeX-like platform for Edge Plus
Ready For is rolling out to Verizon Edge+ devices in the US The update will also include an OS upgrade to Android 11.
Motorola has introduced a new feature that allows users to mirror phone content to a desktop. Called Ready For, the feature is currently available on its flagship Edge Plus.
The concept is very similar to Samsung's DeX functionality. It allows users to plug their phone into a larger screen through USB Type-C to USB Type-C or USB Type-C to HDMI cable. Users can also attach (wirelessly) a mouse and keyboard to their handset to complete a PC-like experience.
Apart from a basic desktop experience, Motorola's Ready For also leverages the camera prowess of the handset. It essentially means users can use either the 108-megapixel main lens or the 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens for video conferencing.
While the main objective remains to assist productivity-focused users, Ready For also has a few entertainment options. For instance, users can also wirelessly connect a controller and use the handset as a makeshift console. The feature will work for native mobile games such as Fortnite or cloud-based games through services, such as Microsoft's xCloud.
“Take the already incredible entertainment experience on edge+ to the next level when you connect your phone to an external display. Ready For works with most TV's or displays, so no costly Smart TV is required. And when you're on the go, you can take your full library of content with you with no need to worry about your passwords to Disney+ or Discovery+. The TV launcher allows you to see all your favourite apps and entertainment at a glance in an easy-to-read dashboard,” according to Motorola.
Motorola is also looking to improve the experience through a new device called “Ready For Dock.” As the name implies, it allows users to hold the phone in portrait or landscape position. Users can also adjust the angle using the flexible hinge design or simply mount it on a tripod. The device will start shipping in the US via Amazon starting April 19. The pricing will be announced later.
