Vivo X21 with in-display fingerprint sensor launched in India: Price, full specifications, features

Vivo X21 will be the first phone in India to come with an under-display fingerprint sensor. Here’s everything you need to know about the smartphone.

Vivo on Tuesday launched its X21 smartphone in India at 35,990. The smartphone will be available starting today via Flipkart and the company's online store.

Vivo VX1 stands out for its in-display fingerprint sensor which is touted as the first for a smartphone. With this technology, the smartphone can be unlocked with just a tap on the screen. Vivo had begun pre-orders for the phone ahead of its official launch.

Vivo had launched smartphone earlier this March in China. This is the second smartphone from Vivo to feature an under-display fingerprint scanner. Earlier, the company had showcased a concept X20 Plus UD smartphone with the same technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The under-display fingerprint scanner is said to be a big milestone for smartphone companies as it eliminates the need for an additional hardware element in the phone. According to an IHS Markit report, about 100 million phones featuring screens with built-in fingerprint sensors will be shipped by 2019.'

Vivo X21 specifications

Vivo X21 features a 6.28-Inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with 19:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood of the smartphone runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. For photography, Vivo X21 sports a dual-camera setup at the rear comprising of a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. UP front, it houses a 12-megapixel camera for selfies.

On the software front, Vivo X21 runs Android 8.1-based on FunTouch OS 4.0. it also comes with support for Android P public beta. The smartphone packs a 3,200mAh battery. Vivo X21 also features a facial recognition technology which works in low light conditions as well using an infrared light sensor.

1:01pm: In terms of software, Vivo X21 runs on Android 8.1-based FunTouch OS 4.0. It is also among the few non-Google phones to support Android P beta at the moment.

1:00pm: For audio enthusiasts, Vivo X21 delivers 360-degree sound along with other two sound modes. The phone comes with a dedicated AK4376A Hi-Fi audio chip.

12:59pm: Vivo has also integrated AI into HDR and Face Beauty. The AI helps the phone to determine user's age and gender to deliver personalised Beauty effect in all light conditions.

12:57pm: Vivo X21 uses AI-based Dual Pixel technology to deliver better photos in dark and low-light conditions.  Full camera specifications: 12-megapixel primary sensor, 5-megapixel secondary sensor. On the front it has a 12-megapixel camera.

12:55pm: Vivo X21 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor coupled with 6GB of RAM. It comes with 128GB of built-in storage.

12:54pm: Vivo X21 also comes with facial recognition technology. The smartphone uses an infrared light sensor to let you unlock phones in low-light conditions.

12:50pm: Vivo X21 comes with 90.3% screen-to-body ratio, one of the highest for any bezel-less smartphone. Full display specifications: 6.28-Inch FHD+, 2280 x 1080 pixels resolution, Super AMOLED and automatic colour optimisation.

12:44pm: Apart from in-display fingerprint scanner, Vivo X21 has several Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. The company is set to announce them shortly.

12:42pm: Vivo says it has 50% market share in the 20,000- 30,000 smartphone segment between March and April 2018.

12:40pm: Vivo claims X21 will be a gamechanger in the Indian smartphone market.

12:38pm: Vivo is preparing for 5G technology at its R&D centre in China. Vivo lauds Apex, the concept phone it had unveiled earlier this year. The Apex phone came with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

12:36pm: Vivo points out it launched X1 as the world's first Hi-Fi music smartphone. In 2014, it launched Vivo X5 Max phone that was just 4.75mm slim.

12:34pm: The event kicks off with Vivo highlighting the company's focus on the Indian market. Nipun Marya, Head of Marketing Strategy, takes the stage.

12:19pm: The highlight of the phone is going to be the under display fingerprint scanner. As said earlier, the technology enables you to unlock the phone by just tapping on the display.

12:13pm: Vivo X21 is expected to come with a premium price tag. In China, Vivo X21 is priced at CNY 2,898 ( 29,900 approximately) for the base variant and CNY 3,198 ( 33,000 approximately) for the top-end model.

11:59am: Vivo X21 also comes with a cut-out display on the front. Vivo has launched quite a few phones with notch displays. Vivo recently launched Vivo V9 with an iPhone X-like display in India for 22,990.

11:47am: Interested consumers can pre-book the smartphone against a charge of 2,000.

11:30am: Vivo recently unveiled the X21 FIFA World Cup 2018 edition. The company launched two variants in red and blue colours representing Russia's flag, the host country for the World Cup.

11:15am: Vivo had started pre-booking for the smartphone on the company's e-store. The smartphone will be sold exclusively via Flipkart starting today.
