Apple at its WWDC 2020 developer conference previewed iPadOS 14. The second iteration of OS for iPads brings a wide range of new features including an updated interface. Apple separated the OS for iPad last year as it aims to build an interoperable software ecosystem.

Visual enhancements

Apple has redesigned the interface for incoming calls and FaceTime. The updated interface features a short banner for accepting the call. Another change is how Siri appears on the screen. With iPad OS 14, Siri will appear at the bottom of the screen when summoned. It will also quickly remove itself when executing tasks such as launching an application or controlling music.

Apple has also redesigned sidebars for its native applications such as Calendar, Files, Apple Music and Photos among others. The redesign essentially brings consolidated navigation for easier switching. The toolbars have also been improved. There's a new pull-down menu to give users quicker access to controls of an app.

Search

Apple has revamped Search functionality on the iPadOS 14. The reimagined functionality now allows users to not only search applications or locating an app but also from the web. The updated Search is said to deliver more relevant suggestions as users type their query.

Stylus

If you use Apple Pencil, Apple has a wide range of new features for you. The latest iPadOS 14 brings the ability to scribble. After the update, iPad users can now type in any text field using the stylus, and it will automatically convert into typed text. Apple points out that the conversion happens on the device so the data is safe for users.

AR

Apple has launched ARKit 4 with the iPadOS 14. The latest Augmented Reality kit brings a new depth API which allows developers to leverage LiDAR scanner on the new iPad Pro. The new ARKit also offers location anchors for iPadOS applications.
