Walmart-owned Flipkart has introduced a new Sell Back programme allowing users to sell their old smartphones on the e-commerce giant regardless of the brand. This will reduce the amount of e-waste that is generated by used smartphones and other gadgets. Initially, the Flipkart Sell Back scheme will allow users to sell smartphones only, however, the company says that it will be expanded to other categories as well. This programme was launched after Flipkart acquired an electronics re-commerce firm Yaantra. The new Flipkart Sell Back programme is available across 1,700 PIN codes in major cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Patna, and more.

Flipkart said that the new Sell Back programme is live on the Flipkart app. The Sell Back option is located in the bottom bar. Buyers selling their used mobile phones will receive the right buy-back value in the form of a Flipkart Electronic Gift Voucher. Sellers will be told the value of their smartphone, based on their answers to simple questions – similar to the exchange programme on the e-commerce site. Once the customer fills all the details, a Flipkart executive will pick up the smartphone within 48 hours. Once done, Flipkart will verify the product and send an e-voucher to the customer in return for the smartphone.

Flipkart in its press release, cited an IDC report that suggests that there are nearly 125 million (approx.) used smartphones in India, out of which only 20 million reach the refurbished market. Almost 85% of the used smartphones end up in the garbage, which eventually increases the amount of e-waste in the environment. This program has been launched to solve this issue and provide users with a reliable platform to sell their smartphones and get the right buy-back value.
