OnlyFans, which is known for hosting adult content, which some describe as pornography, has reported a sharp rise in users during theCovid lockdown. The website has 180 million registered users and over two million creators worldwide. The portal has paid out over $5 bn to its content creators since it first started trading five years ago, it said.

Despite a spike in users, the social media platform has faced criticism for not doing enough to prevent under-age users from selling explicit content. In August 2021, the site changed its policy after receiving pressure from its banking partners. It has announced to ban all sexually explicit photos and videos from October. However, it got backlash from its users following which OnlyFans suspended the policy change a week later.

OnlyFans was founded by Tim Stokely in 2016. The site is a social media platform where musicians, fitness trainers and celebrities charge their followers for tips and visual content. But it is best known for allowing adult content creators like porn stars and sex workers for charging for sexually explicit photographs and videos. The website takes a 20% commission on all payments made to its content creators.

Meanwhile, Stokely has stepped down from its role, and appointed a new female chief executive, Amrapali Gan. Stokely shared this news through a social media post where said that he is stepping down "to pursue new endeavours". He added, “I'm passing the baton on to a colleague and a friend, who has the vision and drive to help the organisation reach tremendous potential."

Gan while talking to BBC said that she is proud to assume this role and is looking forward to working closely with OnlyFans' creator community to help them maximize control over, and monetise their content. She called the portal "the safest social media platform in the world" and said that the firm offers "a unique experience" for its creators and fans.

Ms Gan also shared that company would increase its investment in its free streaming app, OFTV, and launch new tools for creators.

She joined OnlyFans in 2020 as marketing head.
