Microsoft is bidding goodbye to its age-old Internet Explorer browser. Well not entirely, but Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer 11 for its 365 apps on August 17, 2021. Microsoft is also ending support for its legacy Edge browser on March 9, 2021.

Internet Explorer will either stop working or customers will have a downgraded experience when connected via Microsoft 365 apps. With no support after August 17, 2021, Microsoft 365 users on Internet Explorer will not be able to access some features while some will stop working entirely. Before the August deadline, Microsoft will cut off support Internet Explorer on its Teams platform.

It's not all bad news though for businesses which still use Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft in its blog post said that customers who have their own legacy IE 11 apps and investments will be able to continue using them. It's worth noting that there are still tons of businesses that rely on Internet Explorer for its services. Microsoft isn't killing Internet Explorer just yet owing to the business customers it still has, but it's probably high time the transition begins for these companies.

Another service that's vanishing is the legacy Microsoft Edge browser on March 9, 2021. So post this date, the old Edge browser will no longer receive security updates. Microsoft said that it has upgraded most of its Windows 10 customers with the new Edge browser. Microsoft launched its Chromium-based Edge browser last year which comes with an Internet Explore legacy mode. But Microsoft clarified the end of support for IE 11 applies to its legacy app on the Edge browser too.
