Microsoft will roll out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Microsoft Teams this July. End-to-end encryption will be available for 1:1 VoIP calls in Microsoft Teams. This was announced back in March this year, and it will be available by July this year. With E2EE will ensure privacy for one-on-one calls, something that was required since Microsoft Teams is widely used everywhere.

E2EE will be available for Microsoft Teams in platforms including desktop, iOS, Microsoft Teams GCC, Android, and mobile. It will however not be available on the web browser. The rollout is said to start in early July and it should be completed by mid-July, according to MSPowerUser.

“Teams will support an option to use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for ad hoc 1:1 Teams VoIP calls, providing an additional option for conducting sensitive online conversations. To support customer security and compliance requirements, IT will have full control of who can use E2EE in the organization,” Microsoft said in its 365 roadmap.

Microsoft Teams administrators will have control over this feature. It can be enabled either for specific users or for the entire organisation. End-to-end encryption in Microsoft Teams will also be turned off by default so users will have to turn it on. Also, it will only work when both parties have E2EE enabled. Users can turn on E2EE by going to Settings > Privacy > End-to-end encrypted calls. According to MSPowerUser, E2EE will support basic calling features like audio, video, screen share, and chat. It won't be available on advanced features like escalation, transfer, record, and merge. But this is still an important privacy feature for Microsoft Teams users.

Microsoft has more features planned for Teams. It is planning to in-line message translation on its iOS and Android apps. Microsoft is also working on a podcast-like feature to help people go through meeting recordings.
