Ponniyin Selvan, the highly ambitious project by Mani Ratnam, was a risky bet. The movie, which is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan has been explored by many filmmakers in the past, including the iconic M. G. Ramachandran in the late 1950s, but it never materialized. Ratnam himself attempted to turn it into a movie two times — first in the 1980s and second in early 2010s — but remained unsuccessful. However, calling it his dream project revived his attempts to make the film after arranging the funds in 2019. The first part of the film hit the theaters on September 30, 2022 and has exceeded the expectations of both critics and viewers. The film has witnessed success in Karnataka, Kerala and rest of the country. Especially in Tamil markets, the movie has done exceptionally well. It has grossed Rs. 455 crore worldwide. The film earned Rs. 213 crore from Tamil Nadu alone, becoming the first film ever in the history to do so. The film has also become the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year 2022 and the fourth-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.

The film narrates the tale of Chola dynasty and takes place in the 10th century Thanjavur. The story revolves around Arulmozhi Varman aka Ponniyin Selvan, the son of Emperor Sundara Chozhar and brother of Aditha Karikalan, the most powerful Tamil king in South India during his reign. Varman was famously known as Rajaraja 1. The film is based on the life of the king and the chronicles around him.

The movie stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj among others.
