Sony' Santa Monica Studio, the company that developed the company's hit gaming title God of War in 2018, has released a, Enhanced Performance Experience patch for PlayStation 5 users, bringing high resolution gaming at 4K resolution and at 60 frames per second.

When Sony launched the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, it built in backwards compatibility for titles created for the PS4. The studio stated on their blog they were happy to see players taking advantage of backwards compatibility to play the three year old game on the latest hardware, while other first time players had started playing the game through the PlayStation Plus Collection.

“Since then, our team has been working on a video graphics mode option that will enable players to get the most out of the increased performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5,” the studio stated on their website. The patch will allow gamers to play the same God of War title with an Enhanced Performance Experience mode - which is a fancy way of saying they added in 4K (2160p) display support while simultaneously rendering at 60 frames per second.

PlayStation 4 Pro users will recollect that there are two options in the game - prioritise performance, or resolution. Choosing one automatically degrades the other, but since the PlayStation5 has far better hardware, Sony can now add the patch to enable its Enhanced Performance Experience, which should be rolling out to PlayStation 5 users for free today.

If you're on the PlayStation 5 and you enabled the Enhanced Performance Experience setting but don't want to use it, you can revert to the setting to play at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second by choosing the older option, to prioritise resolution instead of performance. It also goes without saying that you will need a 4K capable monitor or TV screen to take advantage of the Enhanced Performance Experience.
