Computers aren't exactly cheap, and with the chip shortage looming all over the world, prices are only going north. These days, a basic Windows laptop with a decent specs will set you back by $400-$500. But how about a computer that only costs $150 and does all the basics with ease? And while it may not be a laptop, you can carry it around with you? AbacusBasic is such a computer that promises to provide the entire PC experience at a fairly affordable price. All you need is a display available to plug this in.

Coming from London-based startup Pentaform, the AbacusBasic is a simple and compact computer that looks just like a keyboard with an attached trackpad. Look around its sides and you will even see some of the necessary ports such as an HDMI port, a couple of USB-C and USB-A pots, an Ethernet port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a mic port. The small keyboard is accompanied by a regular sized trackpad.

Inside the keyboard, there is a very basic computer configuration. You will find a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom x5-Z8350 Cherry Trail processor with integrated Intel Gen8 HD graphics. This is paired with up to 8GB of RAM, although the base model has only 2GB of RAM. Plus, you will only get Windows 10 as the pre-loaded OS, not Windows 11. Hence, this isn't going to be a very capable machine, even for those willing to multitask like a professional.

That said, if you are buying your kids their first computer, you can look into it. The AbacusBasic is bets suited for those who are learning the Windows OS, or those wanting a very basic machine for coding. The only drawback is that you need access to a monitor with HDMI connectivity in order to use this computer. Hence, those consider this as your laptop replacement by any means.

The computer will go on sale later in June and early buyers can even get some discount. For those considering those cheap Chromebook machines for home usage, this proves to be a bit better, unless all you want is a basic laptop setup. Note that the Chromebook machine will get timely updates and works much better with mobile devices.
