Alphabet's stark new logo shows that Google's all grown up

If you haven't been living under a rock, you might have heard that Google the company is now a subsidiary of a giant parent company called Alphabet.

If you haven't been living under a rock, you might have heard that Google the company is now a subsidiary of a giant parent company called Alphabet.

Google, as we knew it, is now just one of the many companies under the Alphabet umbrella that consist of other arms like Calico, which focuses on longevity, and Google X, which is responsible for crazy, futuristic moonshots.

Fittingly, Alphabet now has a brand new logo, which is decidedly more 'grown up' that Google's iconic, colourful logo.

Here's what Wired says about it:

'Whereas Google's goofy logo reflected a not-quite-mature web, Alphabet's rational, bright red wordmark signals a growing-up phase. If Google's logo reflects a campus with multi-story slides and themed conference rooms, Alphabet's says, 'I have a lobby full of Knoll furniture.''

Wired also asked leading designers around the world what they think of the new Alphabet logo and they (mostly) love it.

'It's playful in a completely different (and much more subtle) way! Look at the shape of the counter in the lowercase "a": It's like a water-drop!' says Pentagram partner Natasha Jen.

'It's not as corporate as IBM or Westinghouse, but it is simple and to the point,' says design critic and author Steven Heller.
