In a huge development, the government has just enabled everyone to get a mobile phone SIM at their doorstep courtesy their Aadhaar card. Customers can now apply for a new mobile phone connection through the online medium and get the SIM delivered at their doorstep. The only thing they require to get themselves verified is an Aadhaar card or any other document stored in Digilocker.

"The issuing of mobile connection to the customers is done through an app/portal-based online process wherein a customer can apply for mobile connection sitting at home/office and gets the SIM delivered at his doorstep using documents electronically verified by UIDAI (Aadhaar) or Digilocker," The DoT's order said.

How to get mobile phone SIM at doorsteps by using Aadhaar card: Customers will have to pay just Re 1 for the verification process through Aadhaar card-based e-KYC services of UIDAI to get the new mobile connection.

How many mobile phone SIM are allowed through this process? The process of online application will be limited to only one mobile connection per day issued to an individual or outstation customer.

What has made possible the sourcing of mobile phone SIM at doorsteps? The government has amended the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, in July 2019, for the re-introduction of Aadhaar card-based e-KYC process for issuing new mobile phone connections. It includes Digilocker documents too.

Customers opting for a self-verification process for seeking a new mobile phone connection will need to register with an app or website using the mobile number of family member, relative or person known to them. The phone number will be verified with the help of an OTP.
