The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way networks are utilised across the world. With a vast majority of employees working from home and schools conducting classes online, the strain on residential broadband networks has increased significantly. It has also led to an increase in the number of home and mobile broadband connections across the globe including in India. Now, a new report details the impact Covid-19 outbreak has had on the network and society at large.

According to the June 2020 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, India remains the region with the highest usage per smartphone per month and its total traffic is expected to reach 21EB per month in 2025. For your reference, one EB equals one million TB.

The number of smartphone subscriptions in India reached 620 million in 2019 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9% reaching 1 billion by 2025. The country is also expected to have around 410 million additional smartphone users by 2025 and over 1 billion mobile broadband subscriptions by 2025.

“5G will represent around 18 percent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2025,” Patrik Cerwall, Head of Strategic Marketing Insights and Executive Editor of the Ericsson Mobility Report said in a statement.

Interestingly, the report states that while 5G subscription growth in some markets has slowed as a result of the pandemic, it has accelerated significantly in others. The report by Ericsson expects the global number of 5G subscriptions to top 190 million by the end of 2020 and 2.8 billion by the end of 2025.

The report also expects that the 5G will account for 18% percent of all mobile subscriptions by 2025.

As far as the 5G adoption by businesses is concerned, the report says that by 2030 up to $700 billion of 5G-enabled, business-to-business value could be addressed by service providers. In India, the projected value of the 5G-enabled digitalization revenues will be approximately $17 billion by 2030.
