It has been over a month since 5G launched in India and over the weeks, it has been mushrooming in urban cities. Both Airtel and Jio have been rolling out the 5G services across several Indian cities, with a wider rollout expected by early 2024. Jio is using the Standalone flavour of 5G while Airtel is using the Non Standalone flavour of 5G in India. Jio had earlier released its 5G in six Indian cities and it now adds two more cities.

Jio is adding the 5G connectivity from its side to Bengaluru and Hyderabad; two of the IT hubs in India. Prior to this, the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi and Nathdwara have got Jio's standalone 5G network. Users in these cities will be invited to try out the Jio Welcome Offer, wherein they can access 5G speeds for no extra cost. The Welcome Offer is extended by invite only to select users.

Jio's Standalone 5G network has been promising faster speeds in urban cities. We have seen average speeds of 400-500Mbps, which is much higher than Airtel 5G's speeds. The Standalone network relies solely on 5G infrastructure and does on fall back on 4G LTE network to stay connected.

Users should, however, know that they would need 5G smartphones to support the 5G network. Moreover, smartphone companies need to support 5G connectivity via the software as well. Right now, all the 5G iPhones, which include the iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 14 series, and the iPhone SE 3rd Gen, will get the 5G update in December 2022.

On the other hand, most Android smartphone manufacturers already support 5G networks, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo and Vivo devices.

However, Vodafone Idea is yet to rollout its 5G services and is yet to furnish a date for the same.
