Black holes have always been the most mysterious objects in the universe. They are an astronomical object with a gravitational pull so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it, NASA says. They eat everything that comes near them. And black hole size? If you can imagine millions or billions of times larger than our Sun! But not all black holes are equal in size. Once they are born, black holes can grow by accreting matter that falls into them, including gas stripped from neighboring stars and even other black holes.

Now, a recent study led by researchers at the Australian National University has found a black hole that cannot be termed anything short of a miracle. They have found the fastest-growing black hole of the last 9 billion years!. But how have the researchers measured the growth of a gigantic Black hole? The measuring tool is nothing but the brightness or luminosity around it. This way they can tell how fast the black hole is growing. Also read: These super-scary Black Hole facts just got revealed!

The lead author Chris Onken and his team called it a "very large, unexpected needle in the haystack." He further explained to Cosmos, “As more stuff is falling into the black hole, that material – like a ball rolling down the hill – increases speed and there's a lot of friction within the gas falling into the black hole. The gas then gets very hot, and shines across, in this case, more than half the universe.” Surprisingly, this giant black hole is consuming around 80 of our Suns every year or an Earth every second!

The team reached the conclusion while comparing the newly discovered object with others found over the past 60 years. And in comparison, this giant J1144 black hole is the fastest-growing in the last 9 billion years. However, the reason behind its growth is still not clear. The team suggested that it might be brighter and larger than the other black holes due to the collision of two big galaxies, which may have suddenly caused it to grow rapidly.
