Oppo Air Glass and 6nm NPU for imaging unveiled at Oppo Inno Day 2021. Here are all details.
Oppo Inno Day 2021 has begun and on its first day, two exciting announcements happened. The first one is the Oppo Air Glass, which is essentially the company's first foray into AR glass. And, this is not a concept device! Oppo will be actually selling the Air Glass in China in the first quarter of 2021. The price of the AR glass is yet to be announced.
The other product is a new 6nm NPU chip designed specifically for imaging. Its called the MariSiliconX and is meant to be a party of Oppo's upcoming flagship smartphones in 2022. Oppo is yet to announce any details on the the Find X foldable phone that was teased last week.
Oppo Inno Day 2021 sees AR smart glasses, new chip
The MariSilicon X chip is basically a chip designed specifically for dealing with neural processing tasks meant to enhance camera performance on smartphones. Oppo says that the chip, which is based on the 6nm process, get an advanced NPU, ISP, and Multi-tier Memory Architecture; all of which are meant to aid superior image processing power along with high power efficiency.
Oppo says that the MariSilicon X chip allows smartphone to record 4K AI Night Video in the RAW format using complete image data, which is a first for Android smartphones. The iPhone 13 Pro models are the only other smartphones in the world to do this (remember the ProRaw feature on iPhone 13 Pro series?).
Oppo says that the MariSiliconX imaging NPU will first launch on the Find X Series in early 2022, although no details on this Find X series device have been shared yet.
Oppo Air Glass
The Air Glass is essentially a wearable that makes use of augmented reality. Unlike the renders, the Air Glass gets a monocle design, i.e., it only sits on one of your eyes. The products “is equipped with a self-developed compact projection system — the Spark Micro Projector — and a bespoke optical diffraction waveguide, delivering a vivid and sharp AR display in all types of environments,” says Oppo.
Oppo says that the Air Glass can be controlled with touch, voice and motion control. Wearing the Oppo Air Glass, the user will be able to do activities such as navigation, health data monitoring, teleprompter, and live speech-to-text translation. Basically all the functions you do with a smartphone can now be done from your glass. Oppo says that the Air Glass can be controlled with Oppo smartphones and smartwatches.
