Spotify study reveals Indian music streaming trends, habits

Spotify users are 12% more likely than the average Indian music listener to listen to artists and bands that aren’t mainstream. Here's what else the study reveals about Indians' music listening habits.

Spotify and Nielsen have released a study that shows how Indians connect to music and artists. The study titled “Culture & Audio Streaming Trends” highlights the different music streaming trends and listening habits of Indians.

When it comes to following or connecting with artists, the study revealed that Spotify users are 39% more likely to listen to music for this reason as compared to the average Indian music listener. Spotify users are also 15% more likely to follow the artists they like on social media although 73% of the total respondents do this religiously.

An interesting find here is that Spotify users are 12% more likely than the average Indian music listener to listen to artists and bands that aren't mainstream. These listeners are also said to be the go-to people for music recommendations among families and friends.

The study also revealed listening habits based on different age groups. The 13-17 age group listen to music to influence their mood and to pass their time. Those in the 25-29 age group listen to music mostly to keep themselves motivated, and remain productive. Interestingly, music listeners above 45 years of age are more likely willing to learn about an artist or connect with them.

When it comes to music and the activities that Indians prefer, relaxing at home was the most popular with an average of 81%. Around 71% prefer listening to music while doing chores, and 69% while working. Activities like getting ready and working are preferred by 58% and 50% respectively. An average of 48% listen to music during prayers and worship time.
