WhatsApp to introduce ‘search image’ feature to fight misinformation
WhatsApp’s latest update lets beta users search images on the web. WhatsApp has also added transgender emojis like flag and symbol representing the community.
WhatsApp has rolled out a new update for its beta app on Android. The new update comes with minor features like new emojis and a 'Search Image' tool.
First spotted by WABetaInfo, the new WhatsApp update is available for beta users only. There is no word on when these features will be rolled out to all WhatsApp users. For those who wish to experience these features before official release can do so by enrolling into WhatsApp beta programme. Not all features will be available though, even on WhatsApp beta.
Moving on to the update, there's a new option for image search on WhatsApp. This shouldn't be confused with image search on WhatsApp. Instead, this feature lets users search an image on the web that they've received on WhatsApp -- similar to Google's image search feature. Users can long press on an image and select the 'search image' option.
This feature is considered to be an attempt by WhatsApp to curb the spread of fake news on its platform. Users will be able to do a Google search of the image and find out more details. 'Search Image' on WhatsApp is not visible for beta users as yet. Also, features on beta do not necessarily confirm an official release. WhatsApp regularly tests different features and changes on its beta apps for Android and iOS.
The latest WhatsApp beta update also brings new emojis like the transgender flag. Available under the flag emoji, this one sits next to the pride flag. WhatsApp has gotten more inclusive with an emoji for the transgender symbol.
