Microsoft has officially released the Windows 11 update which is now available for download on compatible desktop and laptop computers around the world. Announced back in June, the latest update to the Windows operating system brings important changes to the operating system in what is being called the biggest upgrade to Windows since Microsoft released Windows 10 in 2015. Microsoft has also released Office 2021, with updates to the widely used productivity suite.

Windows 11 brings a brand new design to users, from a new Start Menu, redesigned apps like Calendar, Paint, Clock, and the Microsoft Store, while users will also see improved dark and light system themes. All of the redesigned elements are inspired by Microsoft's Fluent Design, and give the operating system a fresh coat of paint. However, Windows 11 also includes performance improvements as well as security enhancements under the hood and should provide a more secure experience for users. Support for running Android apps in Windows 11 is not available at launch, and will arrive at a later date.

Windows 11 update availability

With Windows 11, Microsoft will be rolling out the update in a phased manner to ensure a smooth transition from Windows 10 to the new update. This means that some users will see updates to Windows 11 right away, while others could see the update show up next week, next month – or even next year, according to reports. Meanwhile, devices running Windows 11 out of the box should also be available starting today, in case users who have older devices want to switch to the latest version.

Microsoft Office 2021 released

Office 2021 and Microsoft 365 have also received a visual refresh, while the former has gained features found in the Microsoft 365 subscription service including support for the OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.3 used by apps like LibreOffice offering better cross-compatibility between the two. Office 2021 will offer Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Teams in the Home and Student version, while the Home and Business edition will also give users access to Outlook as well, on both Windows and macOS systems.
