Xiaomi's second budget selfie smartphone launched in India today. Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is the successor to Redmi Y1 launched last year. Redmi Y1 is known to be a well-packaged smartphone with selfie camera being the highlight. In comparison, Redmi Y2 comes with notable upgrades and improved design as compared to the predecessor. Display and design
Redmi Y2 and Redmi Y1 have stark differences in design owing to the former adopting the current smartphone trends. Redmi Y2 has a slimmer body with the antenna lines now sitting at the top and bottom of the rear panel. The circular fingerprint sensor still sits at the center but the camera lens are now placed vertically. Coming to the display, it is now a bigger and taller 5.99-inch HD+ full screen display. Redmi Y1 has a 5.5-inch HD display. Redmi Y2 however still has thick bezels on top and bottom as seen on Redmi Y1.
Redmi Y2 has the same 16-megapixel selfie camera as Redmi Y1 but with AI capabilities. Redmi Y2's selfie camera offers AI Beautify 4.0, AI portrait mode, Auto HDR, and LED selfie light for photos and videos.The primary camera has received quite an upgrade as Redmi Y2 sports a dual-camera setup of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel AI-powered cameras. Redmi Y1 houses a single 13-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture.
Processor, RAM and storage
Redmi Y2 has a better Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor over Redmi Y1's Snapdragon 435 SoC. Snapdragon 625 processor is built on the 14nm technology and offers fast connectivity, better displays up to full HD+ and powerful performance. In terms of storage both phones offer the same options of 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage and 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage. There's a microSD card slot for further expansion of storage.
Battery and OS
Xiaomi has kept the battery size same for Redmi Y2 and Redmi Y1 with 3,080mAh. Xiaomi says that with the Snapdragon 636 processor, Redmi Y2 offers better power with guaranteed all-day battery life. On the software front, Redmi Y2 runs the newer Android 8.1 Oreo based on MIUI 9. Redmi Y1 also runs MIUI 9 but with the older Android Nougat.
Price and availability
Redmi Y2 is priced at ₹9,999 for the base variant, and ₹12,999 for the top model. Redmi Y1, on the other hand retails for ₹8,999 going up to ₹10,999. Redmi Y2 will be available starting June 12 via Amazon India, mi.com and Mi Home stores. Redmi Y1 can be purchased via Flipkart and Amazon India including mi.com, Mi Home stores and authorised retailers.
