Call of Duty 2022: Popular first-person shooter Call of Duty Modern Warfare could see a sequel arrive next year, according to several reports. The speculation over the company's successor to the 2019 Modern Warfare game has been ongoing, even as publisher Activision is gearing up to release Call of Duty Vanguard in November.

Video Games Chronicle and Eurogamer have both reported that the new game could be called Project Cortez, and could feature US special forces in the war on drugs, against cartels in Colombia. Popular Call of Duty leaker and industry insider Tom Henderson also tweeted “It looks like Call of Duty: 2022 is codenamed Project Cortez. It's expected to be a sequel to Modern Warfare which was released back in 2019 and leaves a lot of room for a sequel, three years after it was released.

The reference to “Project Cortez” could be a reference to the novel and movie character from ‘Clear and Present Danger' from 1994 portrayed by Joaquim de Almeida and features Harrison Ford, Anne Archer and Willem Dafoe, according to the report by Eurogamer. While readers do need to take these claims with a pinch of salt, Henderson's track record when it comes to gaming leaks has been good so far and there is a possibility that the reports of Call of Duty:Project Cortez could be reliable.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Vanguard is set to arrive on November 4. The game will be released by Sledgehammer Games after giving beta testers a chance to try out the game as part of a public. It is surprising to see details of the next Call of Duty title arrive ahead of an impending launch, but the existing reports suggest that Infinity Ward, the company that worked on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title will be working on the upcoming sequel, also referred to as Call of Duty: Project Cortez.
