Dbrand is selling matte black PS5 plates, dares Sony to sue them
Dbrand’s order page reads “Go ahead, sue us” on top. On another note, these matte black plates are selling out FAST.
In our review of the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) we've mentioned how the two-tone, space-age design might not be pleasing to everyone. It is massive and rather polarising. However, if you don't like the design and are still keen on buying the PS5, Dbrand has a solution for you.
The company known for its custom phone, laptop skins and cases has Darkplates on sale that turn that white and black PS5 into a matte black machine by just changing the panels with “precisely carved slabs of plastic”.
This is not an official accessory, and DBrand doesn't quite care. In fact, the company is asking Sony to sue them for putting the Darkplates on sale. There is a backstory here, of course. A while ago, a small company, initially called PlateStation5 and then CustomizeMyPlates, was forced to cancel and refund orders for a similar product last year after legal action from Sony.
Dbrands order page for the Darkplates reads - “Go ahead, sue us” - right on top.
But Dbrand is not stopping there. The company's Darkplate features a texture that's somewhat inspired by PlayStation button icons microtexture that's on the PS5 and the DualSense controller. Dbrand describes it as “a familiar-but-legally-distinct apocalyptic spin on the classic PlayStation button shapes”.

The Darkplate also has an optional skin for the glossy black middle section of the PS5 in case you want to customise that bit as well or just get rid of fingerprint smudges from that area.
Besides the matt black option, you can also pick from plain yellow and white plates and also patterns like robot camo and recode.
These Darkplates have been selling out FAST with the first three waves of the product set to ship out in February, March and April. There is a fourth wave shipping out in May and orders are open for that. For anything post that, Dbrand is yet to open up further orders. The PS5 Digital Edition version of the plates are not up for sale yet.
Now, converting your PS5 into a matte black beast won't come cheap and going by the sold out status of orders, will also take time. One set of plates sells for $49 plus shipping ( ₹3,560 approx plus shipping charges) and if you include the middle skin, that;s $60.95 plus shipping ( ₹4,428 approx plus shipping). Going by basic conversions the prices don't seem like much for India, but you might end up having to pay a bomb for shipping charges.
