Chip maker Qualcomm is planning to enter the consumer electronics market with a new device that is reportedly a Nintendo Switch-like gaming console. It will run on Android, and will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset, according to a report by Android Police.

Non-final images of the Qualcomm gaming console as viewed by Android Police show a very strong resemblance to the Nintendo Switch. It has detachable controllers on both sides which are quite thick in size so that the processor can run faster and also “more efficiently than a modern ultra-thin smartphone.” The company also plans to add a 6,000mAh battery in the gaming console along with its Quick Charge technology.

The dimensions of the device are unknown at the moment but according to XDA Developers' Mishaal Rahman, it will feature a 6.65-inch display. The gaming console will also come with support for external devices such as a TV or monitor through possibly a mini HDMI or USB-C port. It will also have an SD card slot for storage expansion. The console is said to run Android 12 with a customised launcher and access to Google Play apps and services. It could also come with support for the Epic Games Store at launch. Qualcomm will also use its X55 modem for 5G connectivity on the gaming console.

The launch is expected to take place in Q1 of 2022, and it could be priced around $300 ( 21,800 approx). It isn't confirmed though if this price tag includes the detachable controllers as well. The Nintendo Switch console is also priced at $300 for the entire package with the detachable controllers, dock and accessories as well.

Qualcomm's entry into the consumer electronics market, and that too with a hand-held gaming console is quite interesting. It would also be the first direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch. Other than hardware, its portfolio for games will also be something to look forward to.
