Within Europe, Apple saw its popularity grow the greatest in the UK where the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus accounted for 44.2% of British sales over the period -- up 12.2 percentage points, year on year.

'The longer the new iPhone models are on the market the more their appeal will extend beyond Apple's loyal customers. For now customer switching from Android to iOS remains stable at 18%,' said Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Europe.

In the US, the gains were not so great -- 4.3 percentage points higher than the same time last year -- but the handsets accounted for 47.4% of sales over the recorded period. 'The iPhone 6 was the best-selling phone in the three months through November 2014,' said Milanesi.

Even in China, where Android dominates the market with an 80.4% share, Apple managed a 1.1 percentage point increase on last year's figures bringing its share of the urban Chinese market up to 18.1%.
