Launched in 2012 by Evan Williams and Biz Stone, Medium brings together 'collections' of images and posts related to a given subject. The idea is to provide a space where users can go beyond Twitter's standard 140-character limit for a more in-depth exchange of ideas and content. Each element posted can be recommended, which makes it more visible to the wider community.

Medium currently works only on PC browsers, ahead of the launch of a coming mobile version.

Previously available through invitation only, Medium is now open to users worldwide. Twitter users can sign in with the same login and password.
