The advantage of the new S Pen, compared with Samsung’s older S Pen, is that it does not require a battery. However, devices that ship with the new S Pen will require support for it built into the screen.

If you had asked Samsung users last year which was the only Samsung smartphone that worked with an S Pen, you would have only got one answer - the company’s Note series. However, Samsung broke that paradigm at the Galaxy Unpacked event on Thursday, where it announced that the S Pen would be compatible with the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Now Samsung is looking to expand on that compatibility - NextPit reports that the company plans to “expand the S Pen experience” even further. In fact, reports have previously indicated that Samsung’s rumoured upcoming Galaxy Fold 3 will come with a stylus compartment and an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) S Pen.

The advantage of the new S Pen, compared with Samsung’s older S Pen, is that it does not require a battery, while reportedly increasing touch sensitivity. However, devices that ship with the new S Pen will require support for it built into the screen. Similarly, as the stylus doesn’t have a battery, it won’t actually support Bluetooth features that users of the Galaxy Note series have gotten used to like motion gestures and clicking the camera shutter remotely.

However, the S Pen will still be useful for those looking to quickly take notes on Samsung phones that ship with large displays. These could also prove useful on the company’s cost-efficient A series and M series, which are popular among younger users who could use the S Pen for sketching and making notes while studying or working.

According to online reports, Samsung will also begin to slowly remove the charger and earphone accessories from other devices. The S21 Ultra box comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, while the company stated during the Unpacked event on Thursday that a charger would always be available for purchase. Samsung had initially mocked Apple for removing the charger with the iPhone 12, deleting the posts weeks later.
