Tech Wrap: Apple halts business with Wistron, Facebook bug and more

Today's tech wrap also includes a new leak revealing the possible pricing of Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series, and benchmark scores of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor.

The week is over, and we're almost done with 2020 but there's still a lot happening everywhere and in the world of technology. We got to know about a Facebook bug that exposed Instagram users' personal email IDs and birthdays. Another Google product is shutting down. Apple has decided to halt business with Wistron following the clash with workers at the manufacturing plant.

We also got an idea of how much Samsung's Galaxy S21 series could cost. Qualcomm's new chipset Snapdragon 888 was also tested on benchmarking websites.

Here's everything that made news in tech today.

Facebook bug

This bug discovered by security researcher Saugat Pokharel, exploited Facebook's Business tool, a feature that is available to any Facebook account. Through an experimental upgrade, this bug allowed Facebook business account holders to get additional information about Instagram users they contacted. Facebook patched the bug after it was reported.

Android Things shutdown

Google is axing Android Things, a customised version of Android for smart home devices. The Android Things Console will stop supporting new projects on January 5, 2021. Google launched Android Things back in 2016, and while it did see an initial uptake, the project eventually fizzled out.

Apple-Wistron violence

Apple is putting Wistron on probation and the company is not going to receive any new business from Apple till corrective measures are enforced and completed. This is after the violence that occurred at the Wistron factory by its workers over unpaid wages and overtime. Wistron has also fired the Vice President who oversees the business in India, and are working on fixing these issues.

Samsung Galaxy S21 price leak

The latest leak on Samsung's Galaxy S21 series is on its possible pricing for the European market. Galaxy S21 will reportedly start at 849 euros ( 76,000 approx), Galaxy S21 Plus at 1,049 ( 94,500 approx) and Galaxy S21 Ultra at 1,399 euros ( 1.26 lakh approx). This pricing is for the base model of all the three phones which would be 128GB. Samsung Galaxy S21 will launch on January 14.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 benchmark scores

Benchmark scores for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset are out. These tests were carried out using a reference device with the Snapdragon 888 chipset. On AnTuTu, the chipset scored an average of 735439 points. On the single-core Geekbench test, it scored 1135. On multi-core Geekbench, it scored 3794 points. On GFXBench, it scored 169 points.
