Tech Wrap: Google Photos update, YouTube's TikTok rival and more
More tech news include TikTok copying text from iPhone's clipboard on iOS 14, Mitron app reaching 1 crore downloads, PUBG Mobile sharing more details on its new map.
Today was an app-rich day in the world of tech. There were updates, new app launches and some not so good news. Google Photos announced a major update to its app including a new logo. TikTok was found stealing iPhone users' clipboard data.
TikTok was majorly in the news as YouTube announced a new rival for it. More TikTok-related news include its so-called Indian alternative Mitron reaching 1 crore downloads. PUBG Mobile fans got some more details on the upcoming ‘Livik' map.
So here's a breakdown of all the (well, mostly) app-related tech news of the day.
Google Photos update
Google Photos retains the same pinwheel but with a fresh look. The app has also received some changes like a new ‘Photos' tab that will show larger thumbnails, auto-playing videos, and less white space between photos. Users can also search for images by location in the interactive map. The ‘Library' tab has also been updated with albums, favourites, trash and more.
TikTok iPhone clipboard
Emjoipedia's Jeremy Burge discovered in iOS 14 beta that TikTok copies whatever you type from your iPhone's clipboard. He discovered this as iOS 14 continuously showed pop-ups saying “TikTok pasted from Instagram”. TikTok quickly responded saying that they would stop reading iPhone users' clipboard. How crazy is that?
YouTube's TikTok rival
TikTok has some major privacy issues but it's still one of the most popular entertainment apps and companies can't stop making rivals. YouTube is the latest to come up with something similar which is 15-second short videos on its platform. This feature is available on YouTube's Android and iOS apps.
Mitron app downloads
In India where TikTok is the most popular, it's also facing backlash mostly due to anti-China sentiments. There have been many up and coming desi Tik-Tok alternatives and one of this is Mitron. This TikTok clone is however turning out to be popular with the app reaching one crore downloads on Google Play Store. And Mitron achieved this in just two months since its launch.
PUBG Mobile new map
PUBG Mobile is getting an exclusive map called ‘Livik' which is currently available in beta. We got to more details of this new PUBG Mobile map. Livik is going to be the smallest PUBG Mobile map with 40 players with matches lasting for around 15 minutes. It will however have several interest points like volcanoes, hot springs, and waterfalls.
